New Teaching Pieces for STRINGS

A Grainger Suite by Percy Grainger/arr. Robert D. McCashin, Grade 3.5
“A Grainger Suite” explores various styles, techniques, and simple chromaticism. The three movements include “Country Gardens,” “Irish Tune From County Derry,” and “Children’s March.” Robert D. McCashin has done an excellent job of making this accessible to intermediate groups while staying true to the character of Percy Aldridge Grainger’s original music. A perfect way to work on phrasing and chromatic fingerings without requiring a great deal of technique.

A Utopian Fantasia by Anthony Granata, Grade 3
“A Utopian Fantasia” by Anthony Granata depicts a beautifully majestic and serene landscape shrouded in mystery and wonder. Set in the key of E minor, the opening features a rich legato ballad with an eerily somber melody passing through each section of the orchestra. The mood abruptly shifts to a jarring and heavily accented six-note motif. Reminiscent of Classical literature, a small contrapuntal passage develops this motif, interspersed with the original opening melody. Inversions of the theme finally give way to a call-and-response dialogue within the different sections of the orchestra before finally ending quietly and slowly with a subtle hint to the opening.

Capriol Dances by Peter Warlock/arr. Caryn Wiegand Neidhold, Grade 3
Warlock’s enigmatic “Capriol Suite” has long been a favorite for orchestra concert and contest events. Two of the most famous movements, Basse-Danse and Mattachins (Sword Dance), are adapted here for intermediate orchestra, allowing younger students to experience the high-energy melodies and unique harmonies of these popular dances. These thoughtfully-arranged pieces work well at a variety of tempi, from moderate to presto, according to the ensemble’s ability. An exciting concert opener or closer!

Jet Stream by R. Scott Whittington, Grade 3
Based on a a 3-note rhythmic motif, “Jet Stream” is jazzy, high energy original work with strong melodies and infectious rhythmic components. Shifting is not required. Opt. Drum Set and Piano.
