OMEA Orchestra Committee Meets

Ohio is one of only a few states that keeps an evolving adjudication list of band, choral and orchestra music that gets updated on an annual basis.  Actually, many other states use Ohio’s lists as guidelines for their adjudicated events as well as individual school, county, regional and “All-State” band, choral and orchestra concerts.

On Thursday, June 25, 2009 a volunteer committee of Ohio string teachers met at Stanton’s Sheet Music to update the “String and Full Orchestra Adjudicated Events List” for Ohio’s high school and middle school large group adjudication.  Stanton’s orchestra department culled over 200 new titles from the latest releases that they deemed worthwhile as possibilities.  The committee then used these options to chose their selections for the 2009/2010 list.  The group was led by Cincinnati’s Gayley Hautzenroeder in her final year as Orchestra Affairs Chairperson.  The participants came from all over Ohio to select new pieces for the adjudicated events list and to take off some older pieces that either have gone out of print or have not been performed in a while.  Brian Nitschke from Sandusky, Shawn Hudson from Bowling Green, Pam Thiel (chairperson-elect) from Sylvania, Stacey Lemke from Delaware, Vicky Capper from Granville, Kathy Vansant from Reynoldsburg and Doug and Lori Wright from Worthington all graciously gave up a beautiful summer day to lend their expertise in selecting new string and full orchestra literature from which Ohio’s string teachers can choose their program for next school year’s adjudicated event.  A large stack of wonderful new pieces was built by the end of the day that will be added to the list for future adjudications.

Ever the mother hen, Gayley Hautzenroeder brought food for the whole gang and even invited Stanton’s orchestra specialist, Dan Clark, to join them for lunch in the middle of the day.  After over five hours of intense looking OMEA logoand listening, the committee members were exhausted but pleased with their choices and had every reason to be proud of the work they did to provide Ohio’s string teachers with fresh material to rehearse and perform at the 2010 adjudicated events and/or school concerts.  The updated list will be published in the Fall edition of Triad Magazine and will be posted on the OMEA website.  Of course, all the music chosen by the committee is available at Stanton’s Sheet Music. Order by phone (1-800-42-MUSIC) by FAX (614-224-5929) and on Stanton’s website.  Virtually all the new titles (and thousands of others) can also be heard at Stanton’s Listening Library, so be sure to give it a visit.
