The Passing of a Jazz Giant

Freddie Hubbard Artist TranscriptionJazz giant Freddie Hubbard passed away yesterday from complications of a November heart attack. A vital link in the jazz trumpet lineage that included Clifford Brown and Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard was in his prime in the late 60s and early 70s. Along with his contemporary Woody Shaw, Hubbard blazed the trail of hard bop, fusion and jazz/rock. He took a decided turn toward more crossover music in the 80s and fell off of the mainstream jazz radar. In the late 80s and 90s he returned more to his jazz roots and, although hampered by chop problems, still managed to convey and communicate his jazz soul.

Stanton’s is proud to carry several wonderful publications dedicated to Freddie’s music. They include Volume 60 of the Jamey Aebersold series and a publication from Hal Leonard’s Artist Transcription series.

We’ll miss you, Freddie!

Update: Twilight Sheet Music

Stanton’s is pleased to announce the release of the piano solo book for Twilight: The Score, music composed by Carter Burwell. We have plenty in stock, available for you local Columbus-ians to pick up or ready to be shipped out to wherever you are.

I’ve checked out some of the ‘free’ versions of Bella’s Lullaby you can find online that are transcribed by the movie fans out there, and I can say that while some of them sound quite good, many are riddled with errors in the rhythm or the chords, or both. They may sound close, but I would recommend getting the real thing if you want to play it and mean it. The book is just 14.99 and you get the nice glossy covered book with artwork and these 11 titles:

  • Bella’s Lullaby
  • Dinner With His Family
  • Edward At Her Bed
  • I Dreamt Of Edward
  • I Would Be The Meal
  • In Place Of Someone You Love
  • The Lion Fell In Love With The Lamb
  • Phascination Phase
  • Stuck Here Like Mom
  • Tracking
  • Who Are They?
  •

Check back soon because in mid-January, the Piano/Vocal/Guitar book that includes songs by Paramore, Linkin Park, Muse, as well as many others, will be released.   The songlist for this book is below:

    Carter Burwell – Bella’s Lullaby
    Paramore – Decode
The Black Ghosts – Full Moon
    Paramore – I Caught Myself
Linkin Park – Leave Out All The Rest
Mute Math – Spotlight (Twilight Remix)
    Muse – Supermassive Black Hole
Collective Soul – Tremble For My Beloved

Jazz Education Network at the 2008 Midwest Band & Orchestra Conference

    Ben and Mary Jo

    Ben and Mary Jo

The cold, Chicago winter wind was blowing outside the Palmer House but you would never know it sitting inside the hotel ballroom last Friday afternoon. The exciting vibe of the first membership forums of the Jazz Education Network warmed the meetings taking place under the leadership of JEN president, Mary Jo Papich.

Mary Jo took the opportunity to introduce the dozens of people who have been instrumental in the birth of JEN and passed the mike to several people including jazz multi-instrumentalist and composer, Kahil El’Zabar. His truly inspiring message stressing the incredible importance of jazz education in today’s society was moving to all who heard it.

The interest and motivation of members was obvious given the number and tone of questions asked at the forum. Seasoned educators, performers and industry members were side by side with people new to the cause of jazz education. Papich solicited ideas from the audience to be discussed and considered by the board. Discussion at the meeting included the new JEN website, adroitly designed and maintained by Steve Crissinger of 12-Point Graphics, the organization’s official publication JazzEd and the possibility of future JEN Conventions.

Stanton’s Sheet Music is proud to be a Charter Corporate Member of JEN and is pleased to have Jazz Education Consultant, Ben Huntoon on the JEN “Network with an Expert” panel. Stanton’s Sheet Music is also pleased to host the website for the Jazz Education Connection of Ohio.

Stanton’s Attends the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic

Several key members of the Stanton’s staff flew to Chicago this week to attend the Mid-West band clinic. The new JEN (Jazz Education Network) organization was in Chicago meeting with jazz arrangers, artists, publishers, dealers and board members to discuss the new beginings of the organiztion. Many of the country’s sheet music publishers & suppliers are in attendance also, which gave Stanton’s a chance to talk the issues of today affecting the music publishing & retail business. Meetings with FJH, Alfred, Barnhouse, Lorenz, Hal Leonard, Carl Fischer, Kendor, and many other publisher’s, yeilded new ideas that can be taken into the future of the business. Another great aspect of attending Mid-west is the chance of meeting with composers and arrangers. Ed Huckeby, Robert W. Smith, James Swearingen, Paul Lavender, Mike Story, Sean O’Loughlin, Larry Clark, Jeff Jarvis, Samuel Hazo, Brian Balmages, Timothy Loest, Robert Sheldon, John O’Reilly, Eric Osterling, Andrew Glover, are just the few that we were able to have a chance to say “hello” to. Next year’s convention will be moved to the McCormick Center in Chicago and will leave the historical downtown Hilton’s facility in order to grow it’s event into the future. Thank you for the opportunity to be involved in such an important event.

Alles Gute zum Geburtstag, Herr Beethoven!

I had a professor in college who used to interpret all of music history in reference to the life of Beethoven: “How old was Beethoven when Schubert composed ‘Der Erlkönig’?” 45.

He must live for days like this.

You would be hard pressed to find a musician unwilling to acknowledge Beethoven’s role in the development of modern music. He was one of the greatest composers of symphonies, piano sonatas, string quartets, mandolin music, composer of the first true song cycle (An die ferne Geliebte), a lover of yellow soap, and notorious thrower of food.

Today is also the 235th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. So, brew yourself a cup of Earl Grey or some Li Shan oolong, listen to Fritz Wunderlich perform “Auf dem Hügel sitz ich spähend” and wish Mr. Beethoven a happy birthday, because without him many of us would not have jobs.
