Sacred Piano Highlights 10/27

Here are a few more staff selections from the keyboard department at Stanton’s Sheet Music. These are three of our top picks from our Sacred Piano Workshop from August.

Forever Exalted!

 Forever Exalted!

This is one of our favorites from Lloyd Larson.  We like it because it blends together the old and the new, in a sense by combining contemporary worship songs with familiar hymns. The book is moderately advanced in difficulty.

Christmas at the Keyboard

Christmas at the Keyboard

Christmas at the Keyboard

One of Judy’s favorites for the great selection of songs and the high quality arrangements by Mark Hayes. In her own words, it’s just a great, great book. It is early to medium advanced.

A Christmas Offering

You may recognize the top of this book from our post a few weeks ago about our latest Christmas music on the shelves now. It is a favorite of Caryn, another one of our knowledgeable keyboard staff members. She highly recommends it for the quality and imaginative arrangements. It is intermediate in difficulty.

Elementary Music Highlights 10/20

Sight-Sing a Song (09971136) – Music Reading for the Elementary Classroom

Audry Snyder

How can I teach my students to sight-sing when I have them for such a limited class time? “Sight-Sing a Song” will help you do just that. This well-designed approach by teacher and choral director Audry Snyder progresses in an easy step-by-step manner. Each lesson includes helpful teacher tips that focus on the music concepts being presented along with a teaching sequence to use when presenting each exercise. This book also includes two student reproducible pages filled with sight-reading exercises. The songs and exercises are presented in the keys of C major and F major so the students will experience movable “do.” A CD is also included with the performance and and accompaniment tracks.

101 Music Activities (09971135)

Mary Donnelly

This is a must-have for busy music teachers. This is a fun-filled, substantive activity book that supplements your elementary classroom. There are 101 self-directed sequential worksheets divided into chapters including Reading Rhythm, Reading Melody, Key Signatures, Staff and Letter Names, and Listening and Literacy. Each activity is geared to the National Standards and can be used as an assessment tool. Students’ pages are reproducible and the table of contents shows the grade levels for each activity.

Folk Music Highlights 10/19

The staff picks are rolling in now, and we have a brand new Hal Leonard book to feature here. Selected by our resident folk music expert here, the Old Town School of Folk Music Songbook for guitar it is an essential collection for any library.

Taken from their Mission Statement:

“Old Town School of Folk Music has grown to become one of the largest independent community arts schools in the United States. Yet despite its size and presence, the intensely social, intimate and uncomplicated atmosphere of the Old Town School is as accessible and important as it was in 1957.”

We hope you’ll check out this essential set of guitar lead sheets that includes photos, teaching materials, reference charts, history, and of course over 100 songs to keep you busy.

Choral Department Highlights 10/18

Here at Stanton’s we are always trying to offer the best music for our customers. As often as we can, we’ll present our staff recommendations for the best of the best, the most popular, or perhaps gems that flew under the radar. Here are some of our current choral department favorites.

GOOD CHRISTIAN MEN REJOICE (#08747476, arr. Dan Forrest)
If you have access to 2 pianists, this is a great choice for church, school or community choirs.  The 4-hand piano accompaniment shimmers and really contributes to the energy of this arrangement.

MOTHER GOOSE MADRIGALS (#CM9066, arr. Donald Moore)
A great change-of-pace selection, either as a set of four or individually.  These familiar nursery rhymes get a new life with these fun arrangements.

WHEN WE ARE SINGING A SONG (#15/2406H, Jerry Estes)
Jerry Estes has a knack for writing melodies with a pop “flavor” that kids really respond to, while still including lots of teaching opportunities.  This is a great example – it’s uplifting without being “cheesy”, and fun without being “fluff”.

MICHAEL ROW THE BOAT ASHORE (#6351, arr. Earlene Rentz)
This arrangement is so fresh and original!  It has great motion and energy, and really gives the old folk song a new twist.

General Music Workshop in Streetsboro, Ohio

Stanton's GM DisplayThis past Saturday, Stanton’s was a participating exhibitor at the OMEA General Music Mini-Conference in Streetsboro, Ohio.  The conference was well attended with over 150 participants and five vendors were on hand to enhance the session for the attendees.  Two of Stanton’s staff members left Columbus at 4:30 in the morning in order to be set up by 9:00 a.m.  So it was a long day for them, but they felt that it was worth the effort in order to support this event and General Music Teachers from around Ohio.  Next years event may be moved to Columbus, to bring a bigger draw from around the state.  The Stanton’s booth consisted of Children’s Musicals, Texts, Song Collections, Orff and Kodaly materials.

General Music Workshop

Stanton’s has been asked to be a vendor at this years General Music Workshop in Streetsboro, Ohio.  The Ohio General Music Mini-Conference has been in existance for three years and this year they have asked OMEA to be involved in organzing the event.  One of the ideas that OMEA had to enhance the workshop was to have exhibits at the workshop.  David Adamson contacted me and convinced us that it was a worthwhile event that we should be a part of the workshop.  The OMEA Mini-Conference will be held Friday, October 3rd & 4th, with exhibit area only opened on Saturday, October 4th.  As of today 104 pre-registrations have been accepted.  The location of the event is Streetsboro Middle School at 1951 Annalane Drive Streetsboro, OH 44241
